  JAMES BAVIN 1800- James son of John and Sarah BAVIN was baptised at Gedney, Lincolnshire, on 20 June 1800. (PR) The baptism follows one on 29 June, so 20 June may have been written where 30 June was intended. From C. L. Anderson - Lincolnshire Convicts etc. pages 31, 32, 62) "1816 April: James BAVIN was sentenced to 4 weeks imprisonment for larceny at the Holland Sessions. 1819 21 October: James BAVIN was sentenced to 7 years transportation at Spalding. After serving about 4 years on a hulk he was given a pardon. Back in circulation at Holbeach he was again charged at Holland Quarter Sessions on 6 May 1824 charged with stealing a goose and was given 7 years transportation for the second time. Now he was sent to Australia, sailing on one of the five Asia ships, arriving at Sydney on 22 February 1825. James BAVIN of Holbeach was described as a labourer where his father John was a carpenter. John BAVIN had been found guilty of killing a sheep and was sentenced to death at the Lent Assize of 1814. That sentence was commuted to transportation but I did not find his name on the Shipping Register. On the 1828 census James BAVIN was shown as aged 28 and working for Mr. CLOSE in the Hunter area." According to the Lincolnshire Archives' Convicts' Database James BAVIN, labourer, aged 24, was convicted of stealing four geese from Robert WHITE, Samuel TAYLOR, and Henry SANDS at Holland Quarter Sessions on 6 May 1824. The crime was apparently committed with his brother-in-law William JOHNSON (HQS A/1/1824/Spald/Eas/25-30,163) James BAVIN was granted Conditional Freedom in 1831.
