    • EMMA JANE CRAFT 1866-1922

Emma Jane CRAFT was born on at Algarkirk Fen, Lincolnshire, on 10 October 1866, daughter of John and Emma CRAFT. John CRAFT had married Emma DOWSE in the Boston Registration District in 1864. He was described as a farm laborer (sic) on the birth certificate.
      (GRO certificate)

She was living with her parents in Boston, Lincolnshire, 1871:
      John CRAFT, head, aged 30, publican, born at Algarkirk Fen, Lincolnshire;

      (RG10/3343/12)

She was staying with her grandparents John and Elizabeth CRAFT of Algarkirk Fen at the time of the 1881 census:

John CRAFT was a 79 year old farmer born at Bolingbroke in Lincolnshire and his wife Elizabeth was 76 and born at Algarkirk. Also present was their 22 year old grandson James A. (RG12/2576/132/2)
Note: Jane is probably synonymous with Emma Jane.

John CRAFT died at Amber Hill, Lincolnshire, on 1 September 1893. His granddaughter Emma Jane CRAFT of Amber Hill was prresent when he died and informed the registrar.

      NOTES & QUERIES:
I have wondered for years why one of
the grandchildren of Elizabeth Craft nee Edgoose (1815-1900) was
born and baptised Emma Craft in 1866 but was known as Emily
from a very early age. I solved the mystery last week whilst scanning
birth certificates. Two of Elizabeth's sons, John and James Craft,
lived many miles apart. John stayed in Lincolnshire which is in the
east Midlands and James moved far away to Sheffield in the north. The
only contact would have been by letter. Emma, daughter of James and
Eliza Craft, was born on 8 December 1866, followed quickly by Emma
Jane, daughter of John and Emma Craft, on 10 December the same year!
Obviously Emma Jane was named after her mother but plain Emma's name
was unofficially changed to Emily. Mystery solved by seeing those two
      certificates side by side.
