      From Find-A-Grave.com:
"Walter Batterham is buried in the Stockton Rural Cemetery with a grave marker, which is unusual for Block 36. According to the records maintained by the cemetery, Walter Batterham is buried in Block 36, Row H, Lot 96.

Per the California Death Index, Walter "Battenham" was born about 1884 and he died on 21 May 1912 in San Joaquin County, CA. The indexer made a mistake by rendering the last name as Battenham or the engraver made a mistake on the tombstone with the last name of Batterham. Since the tombstone was put up by a grieving father, the name on the tombstone is most likely correct and the indexer is wrong.

Walter E. Batterham is in the 1891 England Census. The family was living at 1 Trafalgar, Row 1, in the Civil Parish of Wisbech St, in the Municipal Borough of Osler Wisbech, in the Municipal Ward of North, in the Urban Sanitary District of Wisbech, in the Parliamentary Division of North Cambridge, and the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Augustines, in the County of Cambridgeshire, England. The father was John S. Batterham. He was 33 years old and born in Norfolk in West Walton. He was a coal merchant. His wife was Hannah Batterham nee Hall. She was 32 years old and she was born in Norfolk in West Walton. Walter E. Batterham, the only child, was eight years old and a scholar (student). He was born in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.

Walter Edward Batterham is in the 1901 England Census as W. E. Batterham. He was living on Trafalgar Row (as in the 1891 census). He was 18 years old and working as a coal merchant's clerk. His father was a coal merchant, so it seems reasonable that Walter was working for his father. The father was John S. Batterham. He was 43 years old and a widower.

Walter E. Batterham left London, England, on 14 Aug 1903 aboard the ship Ormuz headed for Sydney, Australia. He was then 21 years old and his job was listed as "farm labourer." This may have been the last time his father saw him alive.
