Letter addressed to Mrs. HARRIET RIGGALL (nee EDGOOSE, 1858-1916), Budleigh Salterton, South Devon, from SOPHIE SCHJOLDAGER, 367 W. Huron Street, Chicago, on 2 June 1893 and forwarded to Rose Villa, Alford, Lincolnshire, England:
"Dear Mrs. RIGGALL,
I am really quite ashamed of not having written to you sooner, but I have been feeling quite miserable lately with a bad cold, so that all I have been able to do, has been to drag my weary length to and from school.
Please accept my most heartfelt congratulations on having received that great blessing a daughter. I was so very glad to hear of it and also to learn that you both had made the journey from the border-land safely. It is always such a perilous one, that I am always thankful, when any of my friends have made it safely.
May the little daughter prove a true blessing to you all your life through.
Please extend my congratulations to Mr. RIGGALL, but my most heart-felt ones are for you, for to no one can the daughter be more near and dear than the mother.
I suppose my little lady is beginning to show how bright she is. I had a letter the other day from a friend whose little daughter was then 15 days old; she said that the baby already showed an aversion for Boston and several other signs of intelligence.
School closes in three weeks, and then as soon as my sister's wedding is over, (it is to be the 28th. of this month), I hope to hie me away to the country. I have kept up much better tis year than I expected to, so I think I must have gained a great deal last year.
Remember me kindly to Mr. RIGGALL, MAMIE, the boys and Miss CLARA. If Mrs. RIGGALL Sr. is with you, I should like to be remembered to her.
With the best of wishes for you and the little daughter, and with much love,
Your friend
SOPHIE SCHJOLDAGER
I met WILLIE EDGOOSE this morning and he asked me to send his love"
