  JOSEPH WILLIAM BAILEY 1863-1929 Joseph William, son of John and Jane BAILEY of White Street [Cripplegate Without], was born on 31 January 1863 and baptised at St. Giles Without Cripplegate in the City of London on 8 March 1863. John BAILEY's occupation was policeman. (PR) In October 1866, a few months after the loss of his wife, John Bailey was injured in the course of a call to Gooch and Cousin's warehouse. This injury resulted in his death, leaving his three young sons bereft of mother and father. His death aged 43 was registered in 1866. (www.familycentral.net) (GRO December Q 1866 East of London 1c 5) The boys were cared for by their mother's eldest sister, Mrs. Lucy ALCOCK [sic]. The family was kept together for a while, after which, no doubt, the burden became more than Lucy ALCOCK [sic] could bear. She decided to leave London and go to Nottingham, taking Alfred Benjamin BAILEYwith her. He and his brother John James BAILEY were to keep closely in touch for the rest of their lives. At the time his Aunt Lucy went to Nottingham, he was apparently placed in a police orphanage. Subsequently he was adopted by a Mr. Muir and was taken to Houston, Texas, U.S.A., where he eventually married and reared a large family. (www.familycentral.net) NOTES & QUERIES: A letter from Andrew Forest Bailey MUIR, the son of Joseph William Bailey MUIR, gives the names of his father's wife and the dates of birth of their children. The letter is in the possession of Prydwen Margaret Thomas METZGER, a descendant of his brother Alfred Benjamin BAILEY. (www.familycentral.net) The following are two excerpts from the letter above which was addressed to his niece Effie Hannah Bailey BETTRIDGE and dated 22 January 1934: " Your mother's family came from Aldershot where your grandfather , Old Joe Miles was a Town Crier. . . Your father only had one sister and she had one son. Her, her husband, and her son are all dead. Your mother has two sisters and a brother living yet, to my knowledge." " [He] was a member of Gray Lodge No. 329 Ancient Wree and Accepted Masonry, Ruthven Commandery No 2, Knights Templar, Washington Chapter No. w Royal Arch Masons and Houston Council Royal & Select Masters, and a life member of Ransford Chapter Order of Eastern Star."
