EDGOOSE, head, aged 24, gardener, born at West Walton; Elizabeth EDGOOSE, wife, aged 25, born in Hampshire; Caroline EDGOOSE, daughter, aged 2, born at West Walton; *Mary Allice (sic), daughter, aged 7 months, born at West Walton. (RG12/1306/612/9) Margaret Alice EDGOOSE died aged 5 at North Pickenham, Norfok, on 10 April 1896. The informant was her mother Eliza EDGOOSE, present at the death, West Walton. NOTES & QUERIES: Her mother Eliza EDGOOSE claimed that Margaret Alice died at North Pickenham on 10 April 1896, but the following day she claimed she was present at the death, in West Walton! "A report from Dr. H. G. FOSTER, Medical-officer of Health, was read, which showed that according to directions received he had inspected the state of the village of North Pickenham in respect of some cases of diptheria that had occurred there. Two children named BROCK had the disease at the end of October last, and both recovered. Three children named EAGLE had the disease in November, and all recovered. A child named PALMER, aged 5 years, died from the same disease in November. On 13th January, 1896, a child of Mrs. BLYTH, mistress of the Voluntary Schools, contracted the disease and recovered. The disease had apparently ceased in the village till the 6th April, when a child named Margaret Alice EDGOOSE, who came to North Pickenham with her two sisters from West Walton, and stayed with their grandmother, contracted the same, and died on the 10th, but neither of her two sisters were affected. He ascertained that the three last mentioned children visited with and played with BROCK's and EAGLE's children, in both of which families diptheria existed in November. He was also informed that the child EDGOOSE, before her seizure, had been sitting in school by the side of one of BROCK's children, and concluded therefrom that the child EDGOOSE contracted the complaint either from contact with BROCK's or EAGLE's children, or from visiting the house in which they live. The Medical-officer inspected the surroundings of the cottages and other parts of the village, and found several nuisances existing, and suggested that an immediate abatement of the same be enforced. Kate Agnes EDGOOSE described herself as a domestic servant and gave her address as 46 St. Agnes Place, Kennington Park. She and her son were admitted to the Newington Workhouse, Westmoreland Road, the following day and were discharged "To Friends" after breakfast on 1 July 1893 when Sydney was 14 days old. The birth was registered on 7 July 1893.
