From a letter written by Harriet Doris MITCHELL from 14, Ardross Street, Inverness, Scotland, to Mr. MARTIN on 19 October 1944:
"Dear Mr. MARTIN,
I received your letter this morning & I am afraid I cannot help you much as I know very little about my Mother's American relations. The name "WESTMORELAND" conveys nothing to me - but I will tell you what I can. My mother, Harriet EDGOOSE, had a sister Betsey who married Richard STROHMEIER & lived in Aberdeen. S. Dak - I wonder if that can be your wife's Aunt whom you mention or if it is a Great Aunt. She also had another sister, Mary, whom I think [underlined] was Mrs. BARNES" & she stayed with us when I was a little girl. As far as I know, there are no relations of my Mother's in this country at all.
When you go up to London, you could ring up my youngest brother, Frank RIGGALL, 12 Queen's Rd, Beckenham. Tel. Beckenham 0566 & he might possibly help you. I would ring up first as he is an Area Controller in Civil Defence & is more often on duty than at home.
If you go to Lincolnshire, you could write my other brother, Dr. Paul R. RIGGALL
259, Hainton Avenue Grimsby. (Tel. Grimsby 3071) before you go & he might be able to help you. I had very little to do with family affairs after my father's death in 1927 - they may have more knowledge than I have, and as my mother died in 1916, you will understand it is all a very long time ago now.
My sister, Valetta POWELL, lives at St Moritz, Grand Crescent, Rottingdean. Tel Rottingdean 9180 You could ring her up from London, preferably at night as she is at her business thro' the day - & she might know more than I do.
My Mother's nephew, Rev David HINCHCLIFF, Bourne House, Pocklington, Yorks., might be able to give you information - he is much older than I am - & the son of Alice EDGOOSE."
From a letter written by Harriet Doris MITCHELL from 14, Ardross Street, Inverness, Scotland to Mr. MARTIN on 23 February 1945:
".... I am keeping your enclosure for a few days if you don't mind, so that I can work out relationships a bit for you - no wonder I couldn't place your wife - as I did not even know that my Mother had a sister Sarah! I certainly did not receiveive the two letters Clara spoke of - I had one from her - which I answered at once - several years ago - & will write her again. Up to the present the only American relations I have met are John EDGOOSE & Mary (EDGOOSE) BAYLES - they stayed witith u us when I was a child - & Dorothy & Harry WRENCH, Lizzie WRENCH's children. I can show you photographs of the last two - Harry came over during the last war. It seems to take a war to enable us to meet - ! Anyway we are looking forward very much to meeting you ...."
