She did not marry. She was once engaged to be married but broke the engagement because her fiancé, Gilbert HANNAH, in the process of teaching her to drive, insisted on retaining control of the handbrake! She later established a satisfying, life-long relationship with Elsie, a fellow teacher. Her niece Wendy HELMS fomerly WOOD (who married John Andrew HELMS) describes her as a wonderful character, among other things a teacher of Latin and Greek, a herbalist, home wine-maker and a breeder of exotic poultry. She continues: "Joyce was an entertainly unorthodox aunt who, much to our mother's consternation, once gave me and my siblings aged 10, 12, and 14, a gift of cigarettes (herbal ones for asthma relief, though I now wonder whether they contained cannabis). We enjoyed smoking in public and shocking the neighbouring villagers."

She was a classics teacher in Manchester until she retired to the Lake District at Kirkby in Furness.

Dear Mr. Edgoose,
Thank you for your letter. I will try to help but I'm afraid that I can't add much to what you know.
My father, David Hinchcliff, born 1870 must have had vivid and bitter memories of his early life and never told us anything of it except that his mother (Alice Edgoose) died of pneumonia following influenza - though I have a feeling that my mother said it was T.B.
I have a photograph of Alice Edgoose that I treasure greatly. I have always felt a great affection for her, and well remember it standing on my fathers desk when I was a child. He finally gave it to me because he said that I most ressembled her. I am loth to let it out of my keeping because I have lost so many small packages in the post - contents irreplaceable.
Before supplying any more information, I would be glad to know what use you intend to make of it and whether you are resident in this country or a visitor.
It is most interesting to know of your existence.
I would be very interested to have a photocopy of the Chicago Newspaper cutting and to know of my grandfathers unpleasant end. I am in complete ignorance of it, but one may as well face facts.
I have no knowledge of Lady Terry.
