      NOTES & QUERIES:
A letter from Enid Mary BUTTERS:
"Heronsbridge, Marlingford, Norwich, NOR 40X. Honingham 366
      Dear Mr. Edgoose
Many thanks for your interesting letter of the 18th July which I must apologise for not having answered before. I have been unwell for sometime & things have got on top of me.
Unfortunately, I can be of little help. My mother, Mary Ellen Butters (née Hinchcliff) evidently had a very unhappy childhood in America and never spoke of it. She was fetched from America by her aunt, Harriet, Alice Hinchcliff's sister, when she was 15, 1890 I think, & subsequently lived with her until her marriage in 1900.
I don't know why Alice Hinchcliff left Gosberton and have not heard of Lady Terry.
We have a portrait size photograph of Alice Hinchcliff which we should be pleased for you to borrow, if you wish. I should be very interested to see a photocopy of the cutting of about David Hinchcliff.
I wonder if you are in touch my cousin Margaret Appleby (my mother's brother David's eldest daughter) of White Cross Lodge, Hull Road, York? She visited America 15-20 years ago, & I believe got in touch with David Hinchcliff's youngest son, (my mother's youngest brother) John Willie Hinchcliff.
I am so sorry not to be able to be more help; I am keenly interested, I do hope you will be able to find out something of the life of the Hinchcliff family in America.
I should also like to hear more of your side of the Edgoose family.. I suppose we are second or third! cousins.
      Yours sincerely,
      Enid Butters

P.S. HINCHCLIFF is spelt without the final E."
