Notes
WILLIAM PILKINTON 1838-1923
The 1841 census of Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, lists Elizabeth PILKINTON, aged 30, draper; Louisa PILKINTON, aged 8; Selina PILKINTON, aged 6; Francis PILKINTON, aged 4; and William PILKINTON, aged 2. All had been born in the county (HO107/617/3).
The 1851 census return for Church Street, Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, lists the following:
Elizabeth TOLLER, widow, aged 42, annuitant, born Barholm
Selina PILKINTON, aged 15, born Market Deeping
Francis PILKINTON, aged 14, scholar at home, born Market Deeping
William PILKINTON, aged 12, scholar at home, born Market Deeping
George H. TOLLER, aged 5, scholar, born Market Deeping
Emily TOLLER, sister-in-law, aged 22, annuitant, born St. Neot
(HO107/2095/669 and 670).
It is believed that he "ran away to sea" and in 1853 there is a record of him aged 15 as a passenger on the 'Kestrel' in Aukland, New Zealand. The ship had sailed from Melbourne, Australia. It is thought that he may have worked in the Australian goldfields and been a mariner (ibpilkinton@xtra.co.nz).
