His description at the age of 18 was as follows: height 5 feet 5 inches; hair brown; eyes blue; complexion fresh. He was tattooed on the right arm.

Between 1893 and 1903 he served on the Impregnable, Lion, Victory I, Galatea, Edinburgh,
Nile, Excellent; Duke of Wellington I, Pembroke I, and Andromeda. His annual character assessment was good in 1901 and 1902, but V.G. in all other years. He did not complete his 12 years service and appears to have bought himself out on 23 March 1903. On 24 March 1903 he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve, Portsmouth, for 5 years. He re-enroled on 24 March 1908 but was discharged as physically unfit on 31 March 1909. He received his pension on 11 May 1909.
