      *Joseph DENMAN, head, aged 24, beer seller, born at Boston, Lincolnshire;

      The ship Teutonic arrived at New York from Liverpool on 31 July 1895. The manifest shows the following family from Grangetown, Yorkshire, who travelled steerage class and whose destination was Racine, Wisconsin:
      Joseph DENMAN, aged 29, boot salesman
      Emily DENMAN, wife, aged 24 years 11 months
      Ethel DENMAN, daughter, a child aged 3 years 11 months
      Cecil DENMAN, son, an infant aged 7 months
      Joseph DOWSE, an infant aged 11 months

      (Wisconsin Death Index 1959-1997)

      NOTES & QUERIES:
      The birth of Ethel DENMAN was registered in 1891.
      (GRO September Q 1891 Manchester 8d 306)

      The birth of Cecil DENMAN was registered in 1895.
      (GRO January/February/March 1895 Middlesborough 9d 602)

      Their adopted son Joseph DOWSE was 11 months old on 31 July 1895 according to the ship's manifest. He appears as Joseph DENMAN in the 1900 US Federal Census. Douglas WHITLOCK wrote in 2005: "Surprisingly the ship's manifest listed one of their children as Joseph DOWSE rather than DENMAN which leads me to believe he was adopted. This fact is further supported as the ship's manifest lists Joseph DOWSE as being 11 months old upon arrival on 31 July 1895, meaning he was born in August 18944. This conflicted with family records which listed his DOB as 1893. Apparently the reason for this discrepancy was that the family meant to keep the adoption secret - as the DENMANs had another son Cecil who was born December 1894. Obviously two sons born 4 months apart would raise questions."

      Who were the parents of Joseph DOWSE?
