    James Winfrey EDGOOSE was born at Box Hill, Victoria, Australia on 31 July 1920 (31 May 1920 according to the WW2 Nominal Roll), son of Elsie Gertrude and Percy Llewellyn EDGOOSE. Percy Llewellyn EDGOOSE had married Elsie Gertrude PETTY on 20 February 1913.

    "Post school he commenced a course in metallurgy at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. The second world war intervened. Owing to a five year absence from study and constant dermal problems arising from duty in the tropics he was unable to continue his studies. He worked with an army mate in a glassware distribution business and later as a storeman for a confectionary company." (Letter from his brother Harry EDGOOSE dated 8 February 2000).

    He enlisted in the Australia Army at Caulfield, Victoria, on 28 May 1940. He gave his address as Surrey Hills, Victoria. He held the rank of gunner in the 2/4 Australian Field Regiment at discharge on 25 February 1946. His service number was VX18343.
