In 1957 Jessie Alice EDGOOSE referred to her niece Gladys Margaret SYLVESTER in her will. Gladys was in fact her great niece.
In response to an initial enquiry from Michael James EDGOOSE, she wrote from 142 Victor Street, Grimsby, Lincolnshire, on 25 June 1968:
"My father's name was Bertram Horace EDGOOSE and his father was Stanton John EDGOOSE fruit grower of Wisbech, Cams.
As EDGOOSE is a [sic] uncommon surname, their [sic] is only my brother Athol in Grimsby."
In a letter dated 31 July 1968 she wrote:
"....my father died in 1950 and mother in 1964. My mother's name was Hannah Ann PITTS before her marriage in Wisbech in 1914.
I only have a brother Athol who is single and lives with me and my sister Mabel who has three children, two of whom are married and three grandchildren.
My brother Bertram died in Germany during the war and Denis died at four years old. Regarding Angelina EDGOOSE I am unable to help you, unless she was related to grandfather's brother Ben which I have heard my father talk about.
Stanton John EDGOOSE had three daughters but I am unable to tell you much about them as my parents left Wisbech when I was eight, which was the last time I saw my grandparents. The only one we kept in touch with was "Aunt Jessie" after they died. You asked my father's occupation when he first came to Grimsby, he was a stevedore and later took over a wholesale firewood business."
On 7 October 1968 she wrote:
"Do you take the magazine "Weekend" about two weeks ago there was an article on a Ron EDGOOSE a 56 yr old paper mill worker of Peterborough Northamptonshire. there was also a photograph of him which bears a strong resemblance to the Edgoose family....... My brother Bertram is buried at Hamburg Cemetry Ohlesdorf, the grave number is 2A. B.15. he was in the R.A.O.C."
My parents are buried at Scartho row 132, M.21.
I think there is a family vault at Walton, and some of the family are buried at Walsoken, near Wisbech, Cambs."
Her last letter was written on 4 December 1968:
"As regards to my cousin at Great Coates I knew Aunt Kate had twin sons, but I have not seen them since I was a child. Athol REID (who my brother was named after) is also a cousin, he was brought up by Aunt Jessie after his mother died and the last I heard of him he was employed by the post office at Surrey. His father was in the Metropolitan police force. Of Aunt Bertha, I last heard of her when Aunt Jessie died 12 years ago, she was living in Wisbech, her married name is CURTIS and she has two sons."
In 1968 she said that the name EDGOOSE was seen on the side of a horse drawn removal van near King Edward Street between 1920 and 1940 and that the names was possibly "Edgoose & Co" and possibly still driving around. She said that Bert EDGOOSE's death was reported in a Grimsby newspaper and that they thought there had been a News of the World and "24 Hours" reporter named EDGOOSE.
Gladys Margaret SYLVESTER formerly EDGOOSE of 256 Hainton Avenue, Grimsby, widow of William Joseph SYLVESTER, a Council Gardener, died there on 8 December 1990. Cause of death was I(a) Bronchopneumonia. The informant on 10 September 1990 was Alma ELLIOTT, present at the death.
