      Richard LEEDER, head, aged 50, postmaster and shopkeeper, born at Bungay, Suffolk;
      Elizth LEEDER, wife, aged 60, born at Ramsden, Essex;
      Jessie LEEDER, daughter, aged 17, telegraph clerk, born at Acle;
      *Fred LEEDER, son, aged 13, born at Acle, Norfolk.
      (RG10/1829/104/40)

      He joined the army at the age of 18 years 7 months on 20 February 1875. His rank on discharge was Corporal, Soldier No. 3682 and his Corps was E Battery C Brigade R S & A.
      (Chelsea Pensioners' Service Records, WO97/1808/161)

      Army Form B.268 Proceedings on Discharge show that No. 3682 Corporal Fred LEEDER was discharged on 7 June 1881 at Woolwich. On final discharge his stated age was 24 years 7 months, his height 5 feet 7.1/2 inches, complexion fresh, eyes hazel, and hair black. His intended place of residence was to be the Post Office, Acle, Near Norwich, Norfolk. His years of service under the colours amounted to 6 years and 81 days. He was discharged in consequence of his having been found unfit for further service. Conduct "Very Good". G.C. Badges 2, Certificate of Education 2nd Class.
      (Army Form B.268 dated 13 May 1881 at Woolwich)

      His medical record describes him as No. 5145 Corpl F. LEEDER RHA on 2 May 1881.

      He was finally discharged on 7 June 1881 at Woolwich, having served a total of 6 years and 106 days, including further service to date of discharge.
      (Confirmation of Discharge)

      He married Hester WINTER by licence at Norwich Register Office on 20 October 1881. Fred LEEDER was described as a 23 year old bachelor, a joiner, living at Foundry Bridge, Thorpe Hamlet (Norwich), and son of Richard LEEDER, sub-postmaster. His bride was 22 years old, a spinster, living at Castle Meadow, Saint John Timberhill (Norwich), and daughter of William WINTER, an innkeeper. Witnesses were Fred KING and Anna GOODINGS.
      (GRO December Q 1881 Norwich 4b 446)

      According to the 1881 census returns for the Norwich Lunatic Asylum Hester WINTER was a 22 year old nurse (i.e. born in 1858 or 1859), born at Longham in Norfolk.

      Their daughter Honor Elizabeth LEEDER was born at Acle on 28 July 1882.

      Their daughter Maud Beatrice LEEDER was born at the Union Workhouse, Lingwood, Norfolk, on 25 January 1886.

      Horace LEEDER, the illegitimate son of Hester LEEDER formerly WINTER, a domestic servant at Billingford, was born on 28 July 1890 at Union House, Gressenhall, Norfolk. Hester LEEDER's address was given as Union House, Gressenhall.
      (GRO certificate)

      According to the 1891 census Honor Elizabeth LEEDER was 8 years old and was living at East Dereham, Norfolk, with her uncle and aunt, Henry and Susanna MILLER. Henry MILLER was a 33 year old railway signalman who was born at Hethersett, Norfolk. Susan MILLER was 35 and born at Longham, Norfolk. From the 1881 census of Quebec Street, East Dereham, it would seem that Susan MILLER was the sister of Hester WINTER (Susan WINTER, cook and domestic servant, 25 years old, born at Longham, Norfolk). In 1881 Henry MILLER was lodging at Cowper Road, East Dereham, Norfolk.

      Fred LEEDER has not been traced in the 1881 or 1891 census, but in 1891 his 31 year old wife was an inmate at the Mitford and Launditch Union Workouse at Gressenhall in Norfolk together with their children Maves (sic) aged 8, Maude aged 6, and Horace aged 1. All three children were said to have been born at Billingford in Norfolk.
      (RG12/1555/101/2)

      He was supposedly the black sheep of the family, although he was treated as well as Julia Hannah EDGOOSE in the will of their father, receiving a bequest of £100 in 1893. Perhaps he deserted his wife and children.

      Maud LEEDER died aged 11 in 1896.
      (GRO December Q 1896 Mitford 4b 177)

      There is no record of Fred LEEDER in the 1901 census, but a Horace LEEDER aged 10 born in Gressenhall, Norfolk, was living with his uncle and aunt Henry and Susanna MILLER at 20 Malthouse Cottages, East Dereham (RG13/1872/96/35). He was Honor LEEDER's half-brother.

      The GRO registers of army deaths have been searched from 1881 to 1914 without success.

      The death of a Frederick LEEDER at Hillston, New South Wales, Australia aged 65 was recorded in 1914.
      A copy of the death certificate is awaited for verification of the apparently incorrect age.
      (New South Wales Death Certificate)
