The vijth day of Februarie 1617 I Richard DAWSON of Pinchbecke in the county of Lincoln Clarke being sicke in bodie but of good & p(er)fect remembrance blessed be god therefore doe make and appointe this my last last will and Testam(en)t in manner and forme following
First and especially I Committ my soule into the hands of Allmightie god whoe gave it me most humblie desyering and stedfastlie beleeving to be saved by the alone merritts of Jesus Christ my redeemer and my bodie to be buried on the north sididide of the p(ar)ishe Church of Pinchbecke And soe nere as convenientlie may be unto the Corpes of my aged father there interred and my desire therin is to remove the sup(er)stition which possesseth the minds of many my beloved people And all my worldly [sic] I give and bequeath in forme & manner following
Inprimis I give to the Mother Churche of Lincoln -ijs vjd and to the poore of Pinchbecke iijli to be distributed to the needfull poore of of [sic] the said p(ar)ishe upon the day of my buriall
Item I give unto Will(ia)m DAWSON my sonne my house and all the lands w(hi)ch i latelie purchased of S(i)r Mathew and sir John GAMLYN knights and two acres intermixt latelie purchased of John EDGOOSE together with all the appurten(en)ices ther unto belonging and the w(hi)ch lands are nowe in the ocupac(i)on of my selfe & John PARKER Also I give unto the the said Will(ia)m my sonne foure acres of arrable and one roode lyeing in Newland Fielde and nowe in the use of of M(ist)ris EVINGTON And alsoe two acres of Coppihold w(hi)ch is in the tenure of the said M(ist)ris EVINGTON Alsoe I give unto the said Will(ia)m my sonne my windmill w(i)th the Cottage and the acre of grounde whereon my said Mill standeth and all the Appurten(a)nces thereunto belonging and one acre of pasture lying neare unto the said mill & Cottage, nowe in the tenure of widdowe MACRENES, And alsoe one house or Cottage helde in freefarme, & alsoe the Lease of the next house thertoadioyning in Spalding in the county of Lincoln the w(hi)ch houses I latelie purchased of Will(ia)m HOBSON gen(tleman) and Will(ia)m WILLSBYE gen(tleman)
Item I give unto the said Will(ia)m DAWSON my sonne my free & coppiehold houses in Peterborowe in the county of North(amptonshire) w(i)the orchard and all things there unto belonging , according to the deeds and coppies and Intendment of Williaiam LAMBE his grandfather deceased and alsoe two acres of arrable land being freehold lyeing in divers places in Peterborowe Westfield the w(hi)ch I lately purchased of my brother Willyam DAWSON, & my will is that my said brother Will(ia)m DAWSOSON shall make such good assurance therof unto the said Will(ia)m DAWSON my sonne and to his heires for ever as shalbe advised unto by the counsell in the lawe, and at the cost & charge of my Executor alsoe I give unto the said Will(ia)m DAWSON my sonne one little close being Copieholde lyeing in Wallton nere Peterborowe All the w(hi)ch forenamed lands& tenements both free & Coppie I give unto the said WIll(ia)m my sonne & to his heires for ever
Item I give and bequeath to Richard DAWSON my sonne two acre of hempland lyeing nere unto Tollbridge in Pinchbecke and allsoe two acres of Coppiehould ground therto adioyning and for the w(hi)ch I lately covenanted w(i)th Anthonie OLDFIELDE gen(t)leman and Richard BALYE yeoman being Executors unto John HERRIS of Pinchbecke deceased And my will is that my Executor paying unto [end of page 2] them the som(m)e of Fortie pounds by equal porc(i)ons upon the first day of May and upon St. Michaell tharchangell next ensueing the day of the date here of That then the forenamed Executors of John HERRIS shall surrender the said lands to the use of my sonne Richard and his heires for ever Alsoe I give unto the said Richard my sonne all hose my free and coppiehould lands lyeing and being in both or either of the highe fields in Pinchbecke aforesaid & nine of pasture being freeholde lyeing in the south field of Pinchbecke nowe in the tenure or occupac(i)on of Tobias Chamb(er))lin and one acre of woodground called by the name of Keyrigge, And one messuage wherin Will(iam) STILES now dwelleth w(it)h thappurtenances therto belonging all the wh(i)ch forenamed lands & Tenem(en)ts I give and bequeath unto the said Richarard DAWSON my sonne and to his heires for ever. Provided allwayes & my will is that if either of my said sonnes doe dep(ar)te this life not leaving yssue of his bodie lawfullie begotten That then the surviveing brother shalbe heire unto my sonne before deceased upon condicion yt he shall paie unto Elizabeth DAWSON my daughter or to her childeren if she her selfe be dead one hundreth pounds of lawfull english money w(it)hin one whole yeare next after his brothers decease And further yf it shall please god to take both of my sonnes w(it)h out Lawfull yssue and that all my said Lands descend unto my said daughter, then I give and bequeath a rent chardge of foure poundes a yeare to be paid yearly out of my freehold lands in Pinchbecke to the most industrious poore people of Pinchbecke at the feast of Easter at the discrec(i)on of the Churchwardens & the collectors for the poore for the time being And if god his pleasure be that all my said children do departe this liife not Leaving yssue Then my will is that all my lands both free & coppie shalbe and remaine to the the heires male of my brother Will(ia)m DAWSON for ever he paying ten pounds a peece unto each of his brother and sisters. And alsoe ten pounds a peece to each of the children of my sister Jone COOPER w(i)th in one yeare next after that he shall have entred upon my forenamed lands. Provyded allwayes that this intayle shalbe noe p(re)iudice of my childerens forenamed lands yf his or their will be or necessitye compell to sell the same,
Item I give to Elizabeth my daughter Two hundred pounds to be raysed out of my living stocke and moveable next after that my debts be truly paid [end of folio 3]
the stocke soe remayning to be put forth by my Executrix into the hands of somme faithfull and trusty frends from yeare to yeare by giving good securitie for the principall but I will that noe bond be taken for the use and considerac(i)on but that it be lefte to the blessinge of god upon the stocke & the Curtisie of the dettors And if that the stocke soe imployed doe groue shorte of two hundreth pounds then I will that my sonne Will(ia)m shall make it upp out of his land or stocke. Alsoe I give unto god and to the rev(er)end Mr. and his Successors and to the societie now beng and succeding in Emannuell colledge in Cambridge my Lease of the vicarage of Pinchbecke for the tearme of yeares therein contayned and unexpired desyringe them to purchase the p(er)petuall patronage of the said vicaridge that soe the place may be supplied successively if soe gods will be by a fellowe removed out of that societie Provided all waies & my will is that my Executrixe shall have the money repaid the w(i)ch it hath and shall stand me in at that tyme of their entrance viz. 61 pounds and ten shillings and considerac(i)on for soe much moneye since the time that I purchased the said LEASE of dimmocke WALPOLE Esq. and for the wh(i)ch sum(m)e of 61 pounds and ten shillings I have paid use since the time of that purchase. And seeing that herein I do entend the good of the colledge and also of my people & desire not to gaine any thinge by the said Lease my hope herein in is that they will not desire the losse to be to my wife and children considering how great a som(m)e a corrupted conscience might have raised of the same. Further it being well knowne how ruinous I found all the vicaridge buildings & what cost I have bestowed thereon my will is that the succeeding incumbent shall not needlesslye quarrell w(i)th my Executrix about delapidac(i)on or anye thinge of like nature and that my said Executrixe may at her pleasure w(i)thin six monthes next af affter my dep(ar)ture take of from the said vicaridge ground & remove all such moveables and hovells, and leave the houses and all the other moveables whatsoever w(hi)ch I have brought upon the said ground unlesse that the w(hi)ch shall succeede m me shall desire to buye such things of her at an indifferent rate as he shalbe willing to p(ar)te w(it)h all & forgoe And further my will is that my said Executrix shall take & receive all the tiethes w(hi)ch shall any way be due in the time of six monethes next after my dep(ar)ture, yf lawfullie & warauntably she may doe she hiring a sufficient preacher for and duering that tyme for to discharge the true cure And that the Colledge doe enter in the last moneth of the said sixe momonetthes, the w(hi)ch Condic(i)ons yf they be lawfull and warrantable , And yf the Colledge and my successor shall refuse in whole or in p(ar)te to p(er)forme the same then I give and bequeath my forenamed Lease whollie to my Executrix, And my willl is that she freely p(re)sent my kinsman and hers mr. Francis NEDHAM into [end of folio 4] the same And that she keepe the contingencie of the said Lease in her owne hands And further as my last request I ernestlie intreat that rev(er)e)end man of god Mr Dr. CHATTERTON & his successors and alsoe my Successor that they wilbe pleased to take notice of my two sonnes and to give theire best direcc(i)on to my wife for theire education, their maintenance being all wayes at her Charge and if it please god to blesse them w(it)h Learning then I intreat of them such lawfull favour and furtherance as they shall deserve and if they prove not capable of learning, that then they wilbe pleased to directe them to such lawfull callings or offices or trades as they in their iudgem(en)ts doe take to be freest of corrupc(i)on and deceipte, and I Charge my Executrix to be advised by them herin
Item I give to my brother Will(ia)m DAWSON Dr, HALLs workes & wishe him to spend some time therin and my will is that he discharging iustlie such som(m)es of money, as I am bound w(i)th him for and for the he standeth principall in the bonds and the w(hi)ch debtes blessed be god are but small in regard of that w(hi)ch they have beene that then all such lands as I have of his for my Counter Assurance shalbe reassured unto him & his heires for ever being at his cost and charges, Providovided and my will is that he deale trulie & faithfullie in all businesses w(hi)ch doe or shall concerve him and his my wife and Children, And where anye doubte shall arise I will that it shalbe determined by my beloved brother mr. Thomas STILES & my loving brethren mr. Gregorie STILES & Mr. Robert LAMBE, and by the survivour or survivours of either of them And I give to the aforenamed Thomas for his advise and paines therein Mr. Grenhams workes wishing him to make the word of god his counsellor & the workes of that (illegible) man his conference and consultac(i)on.
Item I give to my brother Gregorie in token of my love DOWNAM? upon the xvth Psalme and I com(m)end it to his reading. And to my brother Robert LAMBE in token of my last goodwill BARROWES method of Phisicke
It(e)m I give to my Sister ROBINSON Ten shillings a yeare duering the time of her naturall life her first yeare to begin at my dep(ar)ture and her legacie to be paid into her owne hands by equall porc(i)ons twice by the yeare

Item I give to John JOSEPHE clarke my second cloake faced w(i)th velvet, and my best clothe breeches and my Jerkin & my bases, and one paire of bootes and one of my riding coates, And yf in anye thinge I have deserved well of my people then I desire them to remember (end of folio 5)

Item I give to Richard DALE my lins(?)ye cloake my second hatt & a Jerkin & xxs. of money to be paid unto him w(it)hin halfe a yeare next after my dep(ar)ture Conditionally that he serve his m(ist)ris diligentlie that halfe yeare she allowing him wages after three pounds a yeare
It(e)m I will Margaret SISON my servant shall have a little baye put uppe at theend of the Cottage to be built upon my hempland against Will(ia)m POWLES dore it to have a Chimney and a chamber and she to enioye it the tearme of her naturall life paying to my sonne Richard the yearly rent of one red apple if it be demanded.
