He was a professional footballer, making his debut for Southampton Football Club at a trial game against Chatham in April 1900. The local press described his performance: "centred with great judgement and shot on one or two occasions with deadly accuracy" but, it was to be three years before Harry would don the the red and white again after failing to agree terms. He had hoped to follow in Arthur's footsteps but he refused to sign for the club, demanding the same pay as his brother.
His next appearance was in the home game against Tottenham Hotspur on 26 December 1903.
He visited Denmark with Southampton. According to The Sunday Times Illustrated History of Football (1994), "Southampton became the first foreign club to visit Denmark, although they demanded a £100 guarantee before making the trip." (page 14, covering the 1902-1903 season). In January 2002 Michael EDGOOSE still had his grandfather's medal or badge bearing the inscription B93. B93 Copenhagen were a prominent Danish club.
The Official Team Card for the match between Southampton and Wellingborough held on 24 September 1904 shows TURNER (H.) to be playing at inside left.
Although lacking the skills of Archie, Harry certainly had an eye for goal, scoring six times in fifteen Southern League games. After gaining a Hampshire Senior Cup winners' medal in April 1905 with the Reserves Harry returned to Aldershot District League with South Farnborough Athletic. His professional career enjoyed a brief renaissance with Reading in 1908.
According to Southampton Football Club records he was 5'7" tall and weighed 11st 8lbs.
He married Mabel Mary BUTCHER, a 21 year old spinster of Park Road, Farnborough, and daughter of confectioner George BUTCHER, at Farnborough Parish Church on 30 November 1904. He was described as a bachelor, a professional footballer of Lynchford Road, Farnborough, and son of ironmonger Arthur TURNER. Witnesses were John William PRATT (who had married Ada BUTCHER) and Annie TURNER.
(GRO Dec 1904 Q Hartley W. 2c 411)
