      (428/5/25)

Florence May OLDHAM and Harold A. HICKMAN married at Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, in October 1928.
      (GRO September Q 1928 Southwell 7b 1058)

They had one child: Philip Stephen HICKMAN (1929-1984) who was born on 20 November 1929.
      (GRO December Q 1929 Lincoln 7a 722)

His grandaughter records that her paternal grandmother always refused to discuss her grandfather. She also records that he, Harold Amos HICKMAN, departed the marital home within months of her father Philip Stephen HICKMAN's birth in 1929.
      (e-mail from Pat McClintock 15.02.2022)

Perhaps it was Florence May HICKMAN who left home shortly after the birth of her son Philip, abandoning her husband.

In 1930 records show that she was living with her parents in Dunston Fen, Lincolnshire. The following year she was living there alone.

In 1935 Dennis D. HICKMAN was born. Whether his father was Harold Amos HICKMAN or a John W. CURRY appears to have been questioned. Philip HICKMAN is said to have assured Dennis many years later that his father was John CURRY.
      (GRO June Q 1935 [OLDHAM] Spalding 07A 523)

Florence May HICKMAN formerly OLDHAM has not been traced in the 1939 register, although she was known to be living with a John W. CURRY at this time.

In 1949, 41 year old Florence HICKMAN called herself a spinster when she married James CROSS. He was 27 years old, fourteen years her junior. James adopted Dennis. Dennis always assumed that James was his father, not seeming to realise that James was 14 years old when he was born.

The death of a Florence May CROSS was registered in 1986. The registration records her date of birth as 21 October 1908. This is in accordance with the 1921 census which records her age as 12 years 8 months on census day 19 June 1921.

      NOTES & QUERIES:
George Stephen OLDHAM (1911-1940), brother of Florence May OLDHAM [see above], seems to have been a bit of a war hero and is buried in France. Oldham Drive in Pinchbeck was named for him.
