According to Peter WOOD he changed his surname from HINCHLIFF to HINCHCLIFF in about 1837.
The family lived at Marble Hall, Cartworth, in the parish of Kirkburton, Yorkshire. Cartworth is part of Holmfirth.
The 1841 census of Marble Hall, Kirkburton, Yorkshire:
*David HINCHLIFF, aged 35, woollen manufacturer, born in Yorkshire;
Sarah HINCHLIFF, aged 25, born in Yorkshire;
David HINCHLIFF, aged 4, born in Yorkshire.

Jonas HINCHLIFFE, uncle, aged 71, retired manufacturer, born at Cartworth;
Sarah HINCHLIFFE, relative, aged 12, scholar, born at Wooldale.
The death of a DAVID HINCHCLIFF was registered in 1858.

According to the probate of his will he died on 20 September 1858 at Marble Hall in Cartworth, Kirkburton, Yorkshire, a woollen cloth manufacturer. The will was made on 7 February 1858 and probate was granted on 13 January 1859 to his widow Sarah Ann HINCHCLIFF of Marble Hall, Cartworth, the two executors and residuary legatees (his friends James PARKIN of Castle Houses, Almondbury, gentleman, and John Edward TAYLOR of Almondbury Common, woollen cloth manufacturer) having declined to act. Sureties were William THOMSON of Huddersfield, Yorkshire, merchant, and Benjamin LITTLEWOOD of Huddersfield, merchant. There is no mention of Holmfirth Mill, but a Wash Pit Mill is referred to.
A Consolidated Index to the 12 pages of the Will of David HINCHCLIFFE (1800-1858), woollen cloth manufacturer of Marble Hall, Cartworth, Yorkshire. The Will was made on 7 February 1858. Probate was granted at Wakefield on 13 January 1859. His children were not mentioned by name.
