Notes
JOHN S. M. BAYLES
A Letter from J. S. M. BAYLES, husband of Mary Elizabeth EDGOOSE (1847-1911), from 318 West Huron Street, Chicago, dated 5 June 1889, to Harriet COCKER (nee EDGOOSE, 1858-1916):
"Dear Sister
Yours rec' yesterday. Mary said I must write to say we are well our friends arrived in Chicago Friday May 24 they telegraphed from Detroit for Mary to meet them at the P. R. Station at 9 30 pm, she went and they arrived on time, they staid till the next Tuesday then went on to Dakoter Lizzie has started to work in the Laundry in the same Position she was in before she came to England (sic) we are living quite a distance from the Laundry and are contemplating to move nearer to be more convenient for her
I must not forget to thank you for the nice presents you sent, they are very highly appreciated by us
Lizzie will write in a few days, we have not heard from Dakoter yet, since our friends left
It is well Willie got out of that water when he fell off those stepping stones
Just now the sympathies of the whole country are stirred over a terrible disaster the bursting of an artificial lake in Pensylvania which distroyed nearly a whole City sweeping it out of existence almost it is estimated from 10,000 to 15,000 lives are lost but you will no doubt read it in your papers it is not near us
The little Boy Jos wanted to stay with us, when they were getting ready to go he came to me to see if I would not hide him till they got away I thought he was in fun but he was in ernest then he tried to run off but Mary went after him I expect my Walter and he had contrived some plan for him to stay
We are glad you could get the money all right and use it as you and Lizzie had arranged
Yours Aff
J.S.M. BAYLES"
